Am I the Only One Who Sees Spots in the Shower?

2-minute read

Tell me I'm not the only one.

I've been wearing glasses since I was a kid. Before I even step in the shower, I let the hot water run until the bathroom gets nice and steamy. It helps my skin, clears my head, and honestly feels like free therapy.

Then it happens.

I start seeing little spots floating everywhere.

At first I thought it was just my eyes. Then I wondered if I was actually seeing tiny water droplets floating through the steam because I don't wear my glasses in the shower.

So I looked it up.

Turns out, it can be a mix of things. The steam creates millions of tiny water droplets that catch the light. Without your glasses, those droplets can look like floating dots. Bright bathrooms and steam can also make eye floatersstand out more. Those are tiny specks inside your eye that most people get as they get older.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says eye floaters are usually harmless. Retina specialist Dr. Rahul Khurana explains, "Most floaters are a normal part of aging, but a sudden shower of new floaters or flashes should be evaluated right away."

So no, your bathroom probably isn't haunted.

Your eyes are just noticing things that are usually invisible.

DA FRONT PORCH TAKE

Getting older comes with a few surprises, and this might be one of them. If you're in your 40s and you've ever stared through the steam wondering what those little floating spots are, welcome to the club. Sometimes the random questions we ask ourselves turn out to have real scientific answers.
