🕊️ MICHAEL WRIGHT: A VOICE BLACK CINEMA WON’T FORGET
The culture lost a familiar face and an unforgettable talent. Michael Wright has passed away at age 70. His wife, Susan Wright, confirmed his passing on August 21. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. (Hindustan Times)
For Black audiences, Wright will forever be connected to Eddie King Jr. in the 1991 classic The Five Heartbeats. Eddie wasn’t just another movie character. Wright gave us the gifted lead singer whose battles with fame, addiction and his own demons took him from the spotlight to rock bottom—and eventually toward redemption. (India Today)
That performance became part of Black movie culture. Decades later, people still quote the film, sing the songs and remember Eddie’s emotional journey. Wright made you believe every high and every low.
But his résumé went far beyond the Heartbeats. Wright appeared in The Wanderers, Streamers, The Principal, Sugar Hill, Oz, and Black Lightning. His performance in Streamers also earned him the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. (Kursiv Media)
Michael Wright gave generations of viewers characters that felt raw, complicated and human.
Eddie King Jr. may have been a Five Heartbeat—but Michael Wright’s work will keep beating through Black cinema forever. 🕊️🎬
