DJ MF SUNFLOWER: RADICAL LAWS

July 4, 2016
1. What is your name?

My name is Shon; however, I am the infamous DJ MF Sunflower, and yes the MF is for Muthaf**kin! Lol!

2. Where are you from?

I’m from both Indianapolis Indiana and Houston Texas. I was born in Indy and then later moved to Houston.

3. How can people find you online?

The easiest way to find me is through my website www.djmfsunflower.com
My social media:
Instagram @sunflowerthedj

4. How did you first get interested in being a deejay?

My grandfather was a musician, and his legacy profoundly influenced me to become a flutist. I loved music from an early age, and I was inspired by Spinderella. I would make mini mixes on cassettes as a kid. Once I became an adult, I dated a DJ by the name of Skimask, and he turned me on to 1200’s. I worked in clubs for many years, meeting many DJ’s that would ultimately influence me to walk into Guitar Center and purchase my first Numark Controller. From then on I started making mixtapes.

5. What type of equipment do you use and where you do spin at?

I own some Technique 1200’s, Behringer CDJ’s and the Pioneer DDJ-SB and I still have my first Numark controller lol.

I spin where I’m booked. I do not have a home club, but that is because I have so many activities to keep up with at the moment that it wouldn’t be feasible. I’m a parent, a wife, an accountant, a law student, a DJ and more! I travel a lot to do shows and events throughout the U.S.

I make a lot of mixtapes. I leave the people with something to keep, something to ride to, get down to, make babies to, lol. That is my passion! Most of them are on my website www.djmfsunflower.com

6. How has social media helped assisted in building your brand?

Social media has given me access to people that I usually wouldn’t meet on a daily basis. I’ve made friends, formed bonds and have even been booked via social media. All in all, it has been good to me.

7. How does it feel to wake up every morning knowing you are a respected female deejay?

Respected? It’s been a long hard road to get here, and I’m still climbing. I’m not where I want to be, but I’m not where I used to be. In the beginning, I would have beef with both male and female DJ’s, for what reason I’m not sure of, but I’ve made a lane for myself, and I will continue down that path.

I believe that much of my "respect" came from winning Fleet DJ Mixtape DJ of the year, as well as being nominated several years, being nominated for multiple SEA Awards, All Star DJ Awards and Salute The DJ Awards. I didn't know that I was being noticed like that until I kept being tagged on social media. I was shocked!

8. What do you want to see changed in your community?

Wow! That’s a loaded question. If we’re speaking regarding the DJ community, I would like for us to work together collectively and build bonds. That’s why I'm in 4 DJ coalitions. I belong to Fleet DJ's, Nerve DJ's, Go DJ's and Coast 2 Coast DJ's coalitions.

Regarding my community in being black, I am an activist, and I work in close collaboration in my community to change the norms. I volunteer and make time for young black women to encourage them to become whatever they want to be in life. I speak at Women’s Empowerment Series. I work to fight against racism, gentrification and nepotism, but that’s a story for a different day. Sometimes I’m called a radical for views and speech. But, without “radical” people like myself, nothing will change.

9. What is a goal or project you are currently working on?

At this point, I’m trying to finish law school. That is my current goal. I continually work to perfect my craft as a DJ.

10. Any shout outs?

I would like to give a shoutout to my mom Dorothy for never giving up on me, my husband Point Blank for always supporting me. DJ Skimask, DJ Complex, DJ Five-Six and DJ Crisco for teaching me. Go DJ Hi-C, Klassik (CEO of Fleet DJ’s), and DJ Johnny O for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their coalitions, and making me earn every bit of it. Go Getta of Texas 101 Jams, for giving me my first radio opportunity, and last but not least Go DJ Clazzik for always standing beside me and helping me to become the DJ I am today.

11. Any advice for people to chase their dreams?

Never ever give up! Even if the plans change, never change the goal! You can be whatever you want in this world, you just have to stay dedicated, even when it hurts, or you’re flat broke, or even if no one believes in you, but you!
